What is a Registered Dietitian? (Also called RD or RDN)
-
An RD is the highest level nutrition coaching provider.
A Dietitian may call themselves a nutritionist but a nutritionist can not refer to themselves as a dietitian due to the specific education, skills and experience required for this title.
-
A bachelor or masters degree in dietetics is required.
This required education includes; chemistry, biology, anatomy, food science, metabolism, medical nutrition therapy, counseling, foodservice management and more.
-
A dietetic internship is required.
The internship involves 1200+ hours of supervised practice in various areas of nutrition (clinical, community and foodservice).
-
An RD must sit and pass the national registration exam.
They must complete 75 continuing education units (CEUs) every five years to continue to hold the RD credential.
This title is regulated by a governing body called The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
-
Most states also require licensure.
In Minnesota, an RD must also be licensed to practice medical nutrition therapy.
Look for an LD at the end of credentials to know the person is also licensed.
-
An RD must uphold a code of ethics.
In order to renew registration, an RD must comply with a specific code of ethics.
Registration can be revoked if an RD does not uphold these standards.
